Victorian and Edwardian Men's Dress Shirts

Over the centuries, the dress shirt has become a sophisticated staple in the gentleman's wardrobe. The best way to notice a well-dressed gentleman is within the little details. The cloth will have a subtle tone-on-tone pinstripe woven in the 100% cotton fabric. For a fancy dress party, a gentleman may instead be interested the shirt which adds a bit of extra flair with a removable jabot. Perhaps the gentleman prefers an accessory with a subtler touch like a dress shirt with studs and cufflinks.

The dress shirt of the 19th century was also marked by a number of design styles and collars that convey a specific degree of formality. The most formal dress shirts were cut and finished in many ways including with a pleated front, pleated bib, or plain front.

Nineteenth century necklines were quite distinctive, featuring either a stiff high stand collar, fold-down wingtip styling, or the rounded "banker" or "club" collar. The iconic stand-up collar was very common, serving as a backdrop for the many neckwear choices of the 19th century including ascots, bow ties and cravats.

In the late 19th century, it was common for shirts to have separate, detachable collars, with buttons or studs to attach them to band collar shirts. We offer detachable collars as well, but most of our shirts have attached collars for modern convenience.
