Dank, dreary days become more tolerable in our Inverness Dress Coat (sometimes also called an Ulster Coat), a Victorian-era must-have for riding through the misty moors.

Falling below the knees, this cloak features a generous cut and over-cape construction (cowl) with buttons from the neck to waist. Two side slant pockets are provided, but no interior pockets. The removable cowl attaches via five buttons under the collar and may be removed for a traditional overcoat style.

Exterior fashioned from a fine blend of 70% polyester, 18% wool, and 12% rayon with satin lining. The cowl reaches 29" down the back, while the bottom coat hem falls approximately 53", below the knees on the average-height man.

Imported. Dry clean only.

The material is superb. The sewing and seeming of the garment is extremely professional. It is so much more than just a stage costume or prop.It is also a warm and comfortable cold weather coat. I did have to have the sleeves and the bottom hemline of the coat taken in. But these are not made custom tailored and I knew that so I had no problem with having some local alterations at a location whose work is on a par with that which was used to create this coat. I love this coat!

Nice coat

This is a nice coat. Although I bought a small I have to take it to a tailor to have it altered. I am 5'7", 150# and to sleeves are about 4" too long and the bottom hem touches the top of my shoes. Other than that it was much heavier than I expected.

Very Nice!

I go to a lot of opera and symphony concerts, at least I did before COVID. It is a fine garment, but you will get a few looks and maybe some comments. I'm okay with that. The quality is good, even if the garment is not as heavy as some fine coats - especially the lining is a bit thin. That is a function of the price, which is inexpensive for this kind of coat. It is okay for three seasons (in Calgary Canada) and I've actually got the herringbone version for colder weather. The fit is great for me - xl-2x for me at 6'2" and 250 lbs. - I can wear it with a waistcoat or with a full dress coat. I love dressing in Victorian style - if you are okay with being noticed, this is the coat for you!

Great coat. Great fit

I'm a little leery of ordering clothing online. I'm a big guy and have trouble getting things to fit, especially outerwear. I've wanted a long coat for a long time, but could never find one in my size. When I ordered the Inverness coat, my main thought was "Please let it fit"
When I opened the box and examined the coat, I was impressed with the quality of the materials and construction, this is garment that could last a lifetime.
Then I tried it on. Not only did it fit, but it was roomy enough to wear a full suit underneath, as I imagine a gentleman of the time would do.
I am 100% satisfied with this item and would gladly recommend it to anyone.

Fabulous

This coat is world-class. It is so elegant. The one problem I had was the lining. Right out of the box it ripped, and I had to sew it. However, my impression is that the coat is stunning. One word of advice, order a size smaller than you normally wear, it is big!

A hit on the first night

I wore this coat to Phantom of the Opera in New York, and it fit perfectly with the venue and the event (it's the oldest show on Broadway...dress up). The quality has inspired me to purchase from Historical Emporium again.

Inverness Dress Coat

The Inverness Dress Coat is first rate: the quality, fabric and appearance are of a very high standard. The coat is ideal for any formal occasion or role play. The construction (sewing) is of exceptional high quality, the coat is fully lined and the fit is generous and long, just right for me and my large built. I have searched the internet for quite awhile now (Both in the UK & USA etc) and found Historical Emporium stands out as the front runner in the products it sells. This Inverness Coat is very expensive here in the UK, averaging over £1,000 plus, thus the Historical Emporiums Inverness Dress Coat offers great value for money, even when you add/include shipping, UK Handling & UK Import Tax to the final cost. I am delighted to be a customer of Historical Emporium and I am enjoying my product with the knowledge of investing in an exceptional high quality Inverness Coat. Thank you Historical Emporium and I look forward to further purchases.

Classy Protection

If you have to venture out in inclement weather for a formal event in a suit this is the coat for you. It splendidly covers even a tuxedo with tails and does so with a touch of old world genteel fashion without sacrificing serviceability. One recommendation I do make is that you get this garment rainproofed by your local dry cleaner.

Excellent Product/Excellent Service

I am a priest and I sometimes wear a cassock, usually on formal and semi-formal occasions. Rarely do overcoats look good with a cassock - in either length or style of cut. The Inverness Dress Coat is the answer! I'm shorter than the model, so the coat nearly covers the cassock. Also the style better melds with the cassock, especially with the cape. This is true of ecclesiastical head wear as well. The Inverness Dress Coat even makes a Canterbury Cap look good.

After taking my measurements I submitted them with a question through the website. The response was quick and reliable. I bought the coat knowing the sleeves would have to be hemmed. Otherwise the fit around the chest and shoulders is perfect.

The construction of the coat appears to be excellent. The only negative is that the lining for the pockets feels very thin. Not a place to store keys. Overall, though, I'm extremely pleased.

A little big, but not a problem

Greatly anticipated this product. I ordered the Small and it fit on the shoulders, but given I'm 5'6 with a 36 inch chest, it was a little big for the rest. Some hemming of the skirt, sleeves, and cape will do the trick though for a better fit. This will come in handy for the winter, as well as figures like Poe and Professor Fate.

Top quality yet very affordable!

Unbelievable quality! Every seam is hidden and the entire coat is well sewn, with no loose ends or messy oversewn stitching. The material is top quality with an excellent weight. The coat is versatile. Any man who sees this coat asks where we bought it!

Better than I anticipated

After months of looking, I took the leap of faith and ordered the jacket. When it arrived, I was immediately pleased with the quality and overall look of the jacket. Unfortunately, it was too large. This led me to place an order for a smaller size (holding on to the first one as a comparison before sending one back). NOTE: I ordered the M/L, but in the end I kept the S. As noted in the description they do come large, so a purchaser needs to take that into account. But, here's another thing that caught me off guard...it was much longer than I anticipated. Having looked at the images, I expected the coat to stop just below the knees; however, it went to the top of my feet (the M/L size). In speaking with their Customer Service Team, apparently the models used for the photographs are slightly taller than me. I was told they were well over 6 feet, and I am merely 5-9...as such, it did run long on me. Now, when I got the S size, it was slightly shorter on me, but still longer than I anticipated. BUT THIS DID NOT DISCOURAGE MY PURCHASE. This jacket is awesome! It feels and looks great. I just decided to take it to someone for a minor alteration on the length. Some people might not like that as an option, but let me tell you, the jacket is worth the alteration. I've not found one any place else that looked as great or was made to this quality. So, I was not about to send it back simply because I was vertically challenged (as compared to the models). That's been the story of my life (and why I never played basketball), but you learn to make adjustments. So, shorter people might keep that fact in mind...the photos make it look shorter due to the height of the models. Outside of that one observation, I have nothing negative to say about the jacket, the service or the overall experience with my order. I am a VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER!

Sizing an issue

Following directions, you'll find that the coat is way too large. Customer service allowed me to return the coat for a smaller size and that fit across the shoulders, but the sleeves extended beyond my fingertips. I had the coat taken in along the torso (shoulders to waist) and the sleeves taken up about 5" and Scotch Guard (to assist in staining / water). I think it will look exceptional when it gets back. Quality looks good. Drape was a bit wide and I had it tapered as mentioned. Coat is fully lined. Pockets are a bit shallow for my taste and I would like to have an inside pocket, but overall I'm happy with the purchase.

Excellent coat!

Very, very happy with this purchase. The coat is the perfect weight and design. Be warned, though, as it is oversized. I wear a 40R jacket and ordered a M/L as per their guidelines. The coat was huge on me, so I returned it for a small. Even the small will have to be altered as the sleeves are too long for my long arms! That aside, this is a terrific coat and will lend authenticity to my Barnabas Collins costume!

Just like the pictures

This coat is of high quality and I look forward to wearing it. It was still quite warm as I put my different Victorian/Steampunk looks together, so the outfits were quite warm.

OMG ! This is simply the BEST

I've purchased similar coats in Chicago and London but OMG ! the Inverness coat I recently bought from you guys is by far superior in quality and detail. I expected a great looking coat, but was exceeded in my expectation.
1. Quality Awesome,
2. Size 100% true as listed,
3. Delivery on time.
I most definitely will shop with "HISTORICAL EMPORIUM" again, and can't wait to wear this fine garment during the chilly fall Chicago evenings.
I give you a ten star plus rating**********

Thanks for being such an excellent American company.
Peace and Love.

AWESOME

This coat came in a box full of AWESOMENESS!!!!!! I was looking for an overcoat as my old one just gave out from too many years of use, and after an extensive search online I found this company and this was just what I was looking for: length, cape, color, style, material and fit. I originally ordered a M/L and I was swimming in it, so I ordered a small and it is perfect. I have a 42 inch chest, 36 waist, 32 inseam, 35 arms and the small fits perfect without a coat or jacket underneath, and the M/L is perfect for a suit jacket underneath, though I will need to get the arms shortened by an inch or two on the M/L. I plan to wear this daily when the rains come and it is colder in Los Angeles (rare, but it does get cold here) and it is a nice addition to my formal wear as well as my business casual wear. If you unbutton the first button of the cape on each side, and button it to the next button under the collar it lays perfectly to display the satin lining over the shoulder. This coat is amazing and the workmanship (workwomansship, do not want to be sexist) is absolutely inspired. I even went back to the website and ordered the Victorian hat as an addition to wear as a Dickens character during the holidays. Well done Historical Emporium, I will shop here again 
