Was looking for a while for nice boots to wear with my day dress and these boots are perfect. Closest I could find to a Robert Land shoe out there. I bought a half size larger so I'll be able to wear wool socks with them in the colder months.
These are very cute and comfy and fit my wide feet very well. The insides however, are unlined, except for a narrow leather band lining the top of the boot. I imagine this helps prevent stretching at the top, but it makes it look like the shoe is entirely lined in photos. I also have a pair of Keckleys and they are a similar fabric upper, but they're lined, and I've never had an issue with them. I just got this pair and have only worn them in normal spring weather and not for excessive exercise, so no more foot sweat or ambient moisture than one would normally expect. I wore these today with a pair of off-white socks, for a few hours, most of which were spent sitting down, and noticed later that my socks were now pink in exactly the areas where the uppers started. The shoe uppers are red. I guess until now I'd only worn these with darker coloured socks. So I like the shoes, but the fact that the dye is poor enough that it bled this easily is worrying, or if there's no way around that, that the shoes were then chosen to be made unlined, is a strange choice. I expect this isn't a concern with the version that has white uppers, but red and probably black too, seem to be bad options if you like your socks.
Be sure to always check the materials section for more information about the shoes, including the lining! The materials tab notes that the insides are a mix of leather and wool, not leather all through. We're sorry to hear that the wool is crocking. This is something we test for, but everyone's body chemistry is different, and some folks may find that their particular sweat composition interacts with some materials in unexpected ways!
I was genuinely worried about the sizing as I had to do some conversion from other shoe sizes but they fit perfectly and the color is perfect for the other parts of my outfit.
good quality
Wonderfully received Christmas gift !
Fits my petite ankle. So I don’t mind attracting attention to my legs. No need to break in. Fits well.
Over the years I’ve purchased a few of AD’s Victorian styles to wear with Victorian 1880’s style costuming—and with my contemporary wardrobe; Tavistock and Renoirs have been my go-to’s…with Alpen and several other styles on my wish list. The one thing missing had been a pair of boots in brown—until now. I saw these brown Larkspurs available on ‘Last Chance’ and decided to take a chance—and I’m so glad I did! I had to go down a half size since the 8.5 was sold out, but the size 8 still seems to fit well on my narrow feet. The lower heel is definitely more comfortable to walk and stand in for a long busy day at the museum and having the wool fabric upper keeps my feet a bit warmer in the chilly weather—a definite ‘win-win’ for me. I’ll be looking forward to seeing future color combinations and considering adding other variations of the Larkspur to my AD collection. Another great shoe style from American Duchess—thanks again!
I LOVE these boots! Even as the weather warms up, the wool is breathable enough that they aren't too warm to wear. They're also extremely comfortable to walk in. I had a rubber sole applied for extra grip, and the cobbler I took them to was raving about how much she loved my shoes!
I've worn them twice so far, and they're very comfy out of the box, at least for me. True to size, if you want to add inserts or wear thick socks, you may need a half size up.
I’m using these as dance shoes because I need a smooth leather sole but more support than an open shoe. I like that there is toe room and the shoes a fabulous!
These shoes are cute, comfortable, and well-made. I can wear them easily with both historical and modern outfits. I get lots of compliments when I wear them. The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is that they take a while to get on and off, but this makes sense because the leather and felt don't have any elasticity. I have purchased a shoehorn, and that should help. The soles are also leather, which is not great with water, but period-accurate. I'm going to take them to a cobbler to get rubber added onto the soles. Looking forward to wearing these shoes for years to come!
I purchased these after buying the natural-colored ones and finding them to be the most comfortable shoe I own, even tennis shoes. I decided I would make them my go-to dress shoes and bought the black ones.
I ordered a size 12, as I normally wear a size 10.5 in men's for the increased width. I find that when I wear dress shoes, they are much too wide because of the thinness of the material of the shoe and of your common dress sock. So I opted for the 12 in women's as they are "B" width, rather than "D." Fit perfectly. I'm quite scrawny, so by feet didn't fill the uppers of the shoe very well, but a heel insert not only made the shoes more comfortable but made the fit perfect without direct alteration.
These are sleek. The wool top provides warmth in cold months and is very moisture-wicking and cooling in the warm months. I recommend relacing them to a straight-laced style to make them just that much more comfortable and look more period-accurate at a glance.
As this is a mixed material shoe, it can look a bit strange with spats unless both materials are the same color. These black ones look excellent with a silver, gray, or white spat and a black ensemble.
I cannot recommend these enough, the rounded toe gives plenty of room and avoids the "toe-crushing" all too common with pointed styles.
Perfect for 1920s-1930s historical dress, but I feel as though they would not be out of place up through the 1950s, depending on the dress.
10/10 would wear again.
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out which boots I would try first from AD. I have solidly wide (D width) feet, 11-11.5 in size. I ordered the size 12 of the Larkspur boots, along with a bottle of stretching spray. Honestly, I'm not sure I will need to use the stretching spray on these at all! I'm really thrilled that they feel quite comfortable on my feet. I am doubly excited that these cover such a long span of time with historical accuracy (over a century!), so I really can't imagine a more versatile boot if you're trying to save money and not buy a bunch of different styles (even though I want to, haha!). Wide footed folks, whether you want a cute boot for modern wear, or something practical to wear with your regency, victorian, or 1930's attire - I'd definitely try the Larkspur out!
These were my choices for dancing lessons I have been taking. They were very comfortable. Not the most resilient to outside walking. They got a little scraped up walking to and from the car. Might be best to put on and take off before going outside or on picnic or outside gardens
Hi CloudsandBluebirds,
Our shoes are designed to be worn outdoors, what you are seeing is most likely the factory sealant wearing away, which is totally normal. We recommend folks to take a look at the information regarding sole care that can be found in the Shoe Care & Customization section of our website.
Bought both black/black (practical) and the burgundy/black for fun (and most of my wardrobe resides in red part of the color wheel.
I never know whether to buy 7s or 7.5s. (My feet are 6.5 -7 length but slightly wide.) Usually flats work in 7. These were a bit snug in normal socks (thinner than boot socks, thicker than stockings), but looked like 7.5s would be just too long. Used some Angelus Shoe stretch and the shoe stretchers (see "Accessories" page), and they're fine.
I knew I would love the wool uppers from having a pair of Gettysburgs (earlier version of the currently available Kecklelys). The center front lacing works better on my foot than the side-lacing. (High instep issue). I also like that these have a more substantial sole and 1/2", so also more practical for everday wear and walking on sidewalks.
The black version is a nice true black. The Burgundy is a gorgeous deep red , more like dark cranberry rather than the brown burgundy the fashion world has favored the last few years. So, yay! That's a triple win for me!
(NOTE: the wool uppers may give a bit, but not stretch as much as leather.)
Beautiful, comfortable. I have very wide feet so I ordered a whole size up, they were too big, so I ordered only a half size up. I wore them out to dinner tonight with my jeans. Comfortable, plenty wide enough. I can even wear my thicker 'stretchy' socks with them. very nice indeed, Thank you!!!
I ordered a pair of Larkspur boots (black/black) because of the very practical flat heed and because they are appropriate for so many eras. I received my order before Christmas and was quite surprised to find out just how cute these boots are! They fit me well and are very comfortable and have a well fitting ankle-a chic, ladylike stylish boot-highly recommend! Thanks to AD for all the lovely shoes-CB
