The shoes are beautiful and comfortable. The only problem is wearing them, which is hard because the buttons ***keep. breaking. off.*** while I'm walking in them.
I bought a shoe button hook tool just to enjoy these shoes. I have been to the shoe repair store 4 times for this problem with these shoes--but I've only worn them 5 times. Today, *both* buttons snapped off the same day while walking. I'm so frustrated. My arch is low.
I bought these shoes back in March of this year, so it's too late to return them. They're so pretty and comfortable that I'm dying to make these shoes work, but so far they're just not. :/ I think my pair may be defective.
We're so sorry you're having issues with your Maes and we're happy to chat futher to find a solution! The fact that they continue to come off after repair indicates the problem isn't a defect in the shoe; it means there's a fit issue or other force causing the problem. Moving the button closer to the edge of the shoe to give more room and decrease tension could be beneficial. You can have the button moved by your cobbler or we have instructions on moving the buttons yourself here: https://www.americanduchess.com/pages/how-to-move-shoe-boot-buttons
Please feel free to reach out to our team at info@americanduchess.com so we can find out more and explore the issue in more detail!
I ordered these shoes to complete a Titanic-era costume to wear to the Titanic Exhibit in Las Vegas. They were a perfect color, perfect fit, and comfy right out of the box to wear walking all day. I admit it. These aren't my first American Duchess shoes as I have quite a few. The quality and comfort and perfect era styling make them my first choice in footwear.
This is my third pair of your shoes and they are amazing. The only thing I did to them is put rubber grips on the bottom. Every pair is comfortable. Our local cobbler gushed (not an exaggeration) about the quality and construction of Lachets I took in and I'm taking my Edwardian shoes in today for grips and I anticipate a similar reaction.
Now I need my costume sewing to catch up with my shoe buying!
I was looking for some dressy shoes to go with an elegant deep green skirt & jacket, and these are perfect for this outfit of mine. I will wear them when my husband & I have a ring ceremony sometime in the next couple months. Elegant, classy, stylish - just what I needed to complete the outfit! *** About size: A button hook helped in getting these properly fastened. They did seem slightly small, going by where the buttons and buttonholes were located. I may try to re-locate the buttons as described elsewhere in your web site; on the other hand, once they're on and fastened, they feel okay, so maybe I won't worry about moving the buttons. Anyway, very happy overall with these lovely dress shoes.
We do absolutely recommend using a button hook to do up the strap, as they are meant to be close fitting!
I'd suggest wearing the shoes for short periods of time to start breaking them in, and make a call on the button location after the shoes have had a chance to stretch a bit and settle.
Absolutely gorgeous shoe and workmanship! Fits like a custom made shoe. Love these
Beautiful shoes. You can slip them on and they fit like a glove.
I have the Mae Edwardian Shoes in French Blue, Red AND Green! I REALLY DO LOVE THEM ALL!!
Until I discovered AMERICAN DUTCHESS, I have been wearing NOTHING BUT flip flops or orthopedic shoes FOR DECADES because EVERY SHOE I TRIED ON H-U-R-T my feet, especially my bunion! I thought heels were gone FOREVER! I discovered American Dutchess and ALL THAT CHANGED! While Mae Edwardian Shoes are comfortable, the Bellatrix Edwardian Shoes are EVEN MORE COMFORTABLE!
I have one pair in black, one pair in Navy and TWO in the Ivory because they feel so good on my feet! I come home, after having them on all day and wear them until bedtime!
I also have the Gibson Edwardian Leather Shoes in tan that I love ❤️
I also have Elsie Edwardian Pumps in seafoam, they fit a little snug, I am working on stretching them. AND while I have the Anna May 1920s Mary Jane High Heels in ox blood and black I have yet to wear them.
AMERICAN DUTCHESS has WONDERFUL customer service! The shoes ARE very much worth the price!

I am obsessed. These are even cuter in person. Fit great and wore them to work my first time and they were comfortable. I haven't been able to wear any heal for a few years because of a foot problem and these worked great.
Totally live these. They are a bit tight, i am still working on breaking them in and getting the leather to stretch. Wish they came in Wide
I thought to myself "I can manage it, it's one button and I'm a grown woman". It beat me solidly. Thrashed me, if I'm honest. Absolutely embaressing. The shoe is gorgeous, and the fit is exact. But there is absolutely no way you're getting that button on without a button hook so go on ahead and buy one now.
Purchased these for my mom as a mothers day gift. They are true to size, she wears 7.5-8 W typically and we decided to go with an 8. The fact that they are a pointy toe did not bother my mom's feet as they are also leather; they fit oh so comfortably. Definitely a winner. More lovely in person! my sister who leans towards a more minimalist modern style was in awe when she saw mom wear these. Now we want a pair too!
I bought these shoes to go with 1940's apparel - since the Great Depression hit in the 1930's people wore their shoes until they disintegrated! So, many photos you will see if ladies wearing "older" styles since new shoes were hard to come by. These give my outfits that perfect 1940's vibe!!
I have purchased the Mae Edwardian Shoes first in Red. I loved them so much I ordered them in French Blue and am now waiting in the green to arrive! I have gone YEARS wearing only flip flops, sandals or orthopedic shoes because I was unable to find ANY others that didn’t hurt my feet! Especially my bunion!!! The Mae Edwardian Shoes do not hurt my feet, even when wearing them all day and I receive SO MANY COMPLIMENTS Every single time I wear them! I can’t say enough about these shoes or this company. This is WAY more than I have EVER, EVER paid for a pair of shoes but I do feel they are WELL WORTH THE PRICE!!
I have a wedding in England this summer and found the dress ages ago. It occurred to me that the dress would require a particular pair of shoes - more because that is my personality. Sometimes I care more about the shoes than the dress! I stumbled upon this site somehow - not even looking for shoes - and these popped up. The French Blue is the exact shade I need and the shoes looked beautiful. I did order the button hook because of the reviews. However, I have slim though regular width foot with a slightly lower arch. I was able to slip these on easily with the button already fastened. They still feel secure but it really was not difficult to put them on this way. I did not receive the button hook in the shipment with my shoes and will have to return it if it arrives as I have no use for it. While not purchased to fit a period dress these are beautiful with the modern style I have. They are also really beautiful shoes. I was pleased by the extra cushioning in just the right spots. They are very comfortable right out of the box. I have a slight bunion on one foot but the toe box, while slightly pointed is not tight. I sometimes size up on heels or very pointed shoes to give more space in the toe box but these fit perfectly and true to size. I am looking forward to wearing them and buying other things to match my shoes as they are so flattering I definitely want to wear them more often.
Hi Lissa,
It doesn't look like you added a button hook to your order with the Maes, but since it sounds like you don't need it, it all works out in the end!
These beautiful shoes run true to size and were still comfortable after several hours of wear on the first outing. ❤️
Very happy with the fit and elegance of these beautiful shoes!
I normally wear 10.5, I ordered 10.5, and it fit great. Even in a relatively larger size, the shoe looks elegant and proportional, snd the heel shape makes it comfortable to wear. A button hook is a must-have for fastening the buttons.
I was a little nervous when I first saw them but once I tried them on and let my feet adjust they were really comfortable. I plan to wear them with some of my 1920s dresses. Can't wait to show them off.
Normally I wear an 8.5, sometimes even a 9. I got these in an 8.5 and they are just *slightly* too large (an 8 may have been slightly too small), in a way that is just frustrating and I'm not quite sure what I'll do with them, as I've already worn them out. They fit very well except that my heel slips out with every step. I've also found the strap to be not tight enough, despite other reviews saying it's too tight. If it were tighter I don't think I would have the heel slippage issue, but looking at the shoe it is *not* an easy fix despite what the site may lead you to believe.
All that being said, they are fairly comfortable. If my heel didn't slip so much I would give them 5 stars.
Hi A.C.,
If your heel is slipping due the shoes being just a touch too long, you can use ball of foot cushions (available here: https://www.americanduchess.com/collections/shoe-inserts/products/foot-petals-tip-toes ) to keep your feet from slipping forward and causing the heel to slip. You can also move the button on the strap for a tighter fit, we have great instructions on how to do that here: https://www.americanduchess.com/pages/how-to-move-shoe-boot-buttons or you can take them in to your local cobbler to have the button moved professionally.
The American Duchess Team
Ordered a size 8 in black. The photos don't do the very pretty combination of suede and leather justice. The heels are higher than the other style of AD shoes I have, but they are so well designed that the heel is still comfortable. I am a consistent size 8, medium width, with a somewhat lower arch. These shoes fit with room for my toes and I can fasten the straps. Make sure you have a shoe button hook to do this.
These fit right out of the box, and I expect them to form to my feet some more. I did buy the button hook, that makes buttoning up a lot easier. Dressy, but can be worn everyday too. Looking forward to wearing these for many, many years!
Upon first receiving the shoes, I was concerned with the fastening button as there was roughly an inch difference between the button and the end of the strap. The shoes themselves fit a little snug - but nothing a little stretching would not cure.
Day 2 - after emailing my concerns to AD and seriously considering returning these beautiful green shoes, I was kindly advised to use the button hook. Since I really did not want to return these shoes, I gave the fit another go today and used my antique button hook tool. This tool makes all the difference! I also did not initially realize that the button is actually on an elastic fastener.
These shoes are snug and will need to be stretched.... BUT they are going to work. Other than being tight, they fit my foot well and are feel very stable. For context, I have a pair of size 10 Janets by Oak Tree Farms.
Thinking ahead to my next AD purchase, I will definitely size up to the 10 1/2 size.
I've owned and worn these shoes for a while, I can say they are fairly comfortable, but as others have mentioned the button hook is a must when it comes to putting on the shoes because it has a VERY snug fit to hook in the button. I've tried doing it without and it was very challenging, not impossible, but definitely took more effort than I would like haha
I normally have what I would call wider feet, as I have a good fit for size 9 shoes normally were it not for the width. I usually would have to go up half a size but I find for these shoes, the size 9 fit just right. I can even wear them with some thin stockings or socks.
I get a lot of compliments when I wear these out, I really love the grey tones in the blue!
