This isn’t a costume shirt, it’s a dress shirt designed to the style of a former era, so I expected a lot and it is nearly perfect.
Purchased for a Regency/Bridgerton costume to wear with vest and stock. My husband has sensory issues (autism, ADHD) so nothing but a cotton or linen shirt works. This was the only 100% cotton one I found.
Seams and buttonholes are dress shirt quality, as expected. No loose threads. Collar has a loop on the back to secure a tie. Collar is double thickness and opaque, stands up on its own but will need ironing and starching.
Body of the shirt is slightly translucent - without a vest, an undershirt will be necessary, but it will be cool in summer.
Cut is era-appropriately boxy to loose. Lots of ease across the back with pleating.
My husband is a chest size 44, but shoulders are 46 so we ordered XL. Turns out he could have sized down to L, as the shoulders are 1/2” past his natural shoulder, but as Regent shoulders were drop shoulders anyway, we’re keeping it.
My husband is 6’, but with a 31” inseam so his torso fits like a 6’2” person. The length is perfect, and even at 6’4” you likely could get away with it, though it may be a little harder to keep tucked in is you’re doing more than walking and sitting.
We’re very pleased with the shirt and I suspect he’ll look for other occasions and ways to wear it, because it’s so comfy.
Photos are hung up wet to drip dry. Relatively wrinkle free, but needs ironing and collar starching for historical accuracy.
WARNING: you can’t wear this out of the package without washing. Plan accordingly. It arrived with an intense petrochemical smell like a polyurethane foam mattress that was nauseatingly strong.
We had to wash 2x (Tide Pods unscented) to fully eliminate the odor. I have no idea why it smelled so bad but I plan to address it with the brand because it also worries me for the factory workers. (It’s made in Guatemala, which has a large textile manufacturing industry.)
This isn’ doesn’t affect the quality of the sheet or ability to use it so no reason to take off a star rating, but if you hate ironing, give yourself time to take it to the cleaners before you need to wear it.
