By the 1870s, the sack coat had surpassed the longer, dressier frock coat as the standard for business and casual pursuits. Considered a subtle rebellion against overly formal traditions, it offered a more practical and modern approach to men’s fashion.
Our reproduction highlights authentic late-Victorian details, featuring soft brushed cotton in a rich black finish and a high-button front traditionally worn fastened only at the top to showcase a gentleman’s vest. Design elements include a notched collar, unvented back for a clean silhouette, decorative seaming, and three buttons at each cuff.
There are no exterior pockets to preserve the sleek line, but interior storage includes a breast pocket and a hidden “ticket” pocket for small valuables.
